Mereside Farm
Mereside Farm is situated half a mile from the centre of the small market town of Ellesmere in North Shropshire.
Ellesmere has a wide variety of eating places: takeaways and pubs, tea shops, cafes and coffee houses; there is an extensive range of shops.
Opposite Mereside Farm at The Mere
- The Mere is the largest of several lakes in the area known as the Shropshire Lakelands.
- Very popular for birdwatching and the unique heron watch (cameras filming the herons nesting and the chicks)
- Rowing boats for hire and steamboat trips.
- There is a Tourist Information Centre by The Mere and Tea Rooms and Restaurant.
From the doorstep
- Stroll along the towpath of the Shropshire Union and Llangollen Canal.
- An eastward direction takes you past Blakemere with its stunning views of the purple rhododendrons in the Springtime or in the Autumn the beautiful autumn colours are relected in the mere. Keep on walking and you will reach Colemere - the mere with a complete circular walk.
- In a westward direction the towpath takes you past the Blackwater Meadow Marina, if you take the 'leg' of the canal you go into Ellesmere's town centre or go left and head towards Llangollen or the Montgomery Canal.
- Take a walk up Sandy Lane - a narrow single track lane which runs in front of the farmhouse. This was the original road into Ellesmere!
- On the left is the Shropshire Wildlife Trust Plantation Wood, crisscrossed with small paths and overlooking the canal.
- On the right hand side is Castlefields where a sculpture trail is located and further on across the field is an arboretum. The paths across these fields lead down to The Mere and further on The Cremorne Gardens.
- Keep going along Sandy Lane and you are afforded views to the North overlooking The Mere,and to the South you look over the Blackwater Meadow Marina and the Welsh Hills in the distance.
- Carry on and the lane takes you past the oldest buildings in Ellesmere and into the town centre.
